The world of selling horses has become insane. In fact, the entire equine business on all levels has changed in ways that leave me (almost) speechless. I am trying to keep up. Trying hard. In some ways, anyway. In other ways, I will always be what I've always been; an admirer of good horses, and when you admire and seek to own good horses, you have to sell some to buy some. Pretty simple. Anyway, a couple of days ago, I watched a young lady I know from back home, sell a really good horse for (what is to me) an incredible amount of money. Amazing! I'll tell you what though, this girl worked hard for her money and it showed. Handy as heck, she spun, slid, rode bareback and bridle less, cracked whips and packed flags straight into our small horse community's history. And she did this almost everyday for two months leading up to sale day...because that is marketing nowadays! This woman isn't just an excellent rider, talented trainer, and handy horseman, she also needs to be a keen business person. Plus a videographer!! Crazy! And there were approximately forty-nine other women in that sale who were of the same mindset and ability! So yes, this horse selling business is leaving me behind. I liked sitting in the old auction barns bidding on that string of unhalter broke run-throughs in the ring. Those were the days! You out bid the meat buyer and took yourself home a diamond in the rough! And believe me, some of those critters were rough. Man, did they shine though after we were done with them. Good horses, almost every one of them. Yes, this business used to be easy come, easy go. Now it's taking videos and pictures and talking to tire kickers, and making movies and adding music, and cracking whips and bouncing balls...tarps and flags...and HUGE money. So, I've never been one to just bow my head and concede. Give up without a fight. That isn't me. This morning, in the wee hours while the world was sleeping, I've been figuring out how to make my very first 'movie'. It's my first step toward keeping up with the times. It's a little flick of 'Shooter', the gelding Richard and I have finally committed to sending down the Futurity trail this year. Two big steps in two days! Now I think I'm going to go train my roping Futurity horse to lay down! Have a great day folks!
